Building Schools for the Future

The Department for Children, Schools and Families has announced the construction of schools for the program in the future (BSF) in 2003. The program is aimed at restoring and / or renew secondary schools in England in 3500 over a period of 15 years - the creation of world-class learning environments that help students achieve their full potential. Schools under the BSF must learn in different ways to meet individual needs, with different groups of stakeholders to cooperate in an early stage to identify the needs and requirements.

New-look classrooms are designed to provide an inspiring environment for young people, teachers and local communities - which should result in increased levels of education. BSF will have the option for parents / carers and pupils in their area and the diversity of the school.

Well-designed schools lead to greater commitment, motivation and education, and encourage innovative ideas for future learning. Investments in new technologies is also intended to help develop and support effective learning environments that promote exciting and inspiring and to support modern teaching and learning methods. Increased performance can be partly attributed to a better sense of pride and ownership of the students using the facilities.

Teachers and students are not the only beneficiaries of this program. Schools are an important potential source for local communities. Services such as sports halls, libraries and IT resources are used by the wider community and can be integrated into rehabilitation projects in general. The equipment provided by the BSF program is designed for the use of shared competence of the Community where necessary - to help the position of the schools as centers of community.

Under the BSF program, the local authorities to a Local Education Partnership (LEP), a new concept developed for OSB. A LEP is a public-private partnership to make up the local authorities, the private sector partner (PSP) (usually a consortium of private companies, including construction) and construction of schools for the future of investment LLP (OSFI) .

Distributors of building materials and builders merchants have an important role to play in the program and helps entrepreneurs to time, cost and quality objectives in the LEP key performance indicators. BSF, and their suppliers - including local builders merchants - all over the country to the labor supply of the project that is supported by the grant of direct government funding.

Suppliers need to help maximize the value of money for materials, including the standardization of products of different projects to achieve economies of scale and reduce maintenance.

Products should be fit for purpose. For example, above the ground should provide excellent soundproofing drainage to comply with Part E of the Rules for the construction, dealing with mitigation in its schools. Sewer must meet the criteria of sound insulation, reverberation time and noise - very important for teaching and learning takes place without unnecessary noise distractions.

The Government has also committed to ensuring that all new plants built in one program, to demonstrate real and sustainable construction of schools under the BSF, a very good BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Energy Assessment Method) rating . Suppliers of building materials should also help the school project to achieve sustainable development by providing the results of innovative and sustainable products and renewable technologies that are now available in commercial quantities.
